Melissani Lake
Melissani Cave Lake near Karavomilos, 2 km from Sami, Kefalonia. Discovered in 1951 and opened to visitors in 1963, the cavern stretches around 160 m, with chambers up to 36 m high and a lake reaching 30–39 m deep. A portion of the roof collapsed—likely due to the 1953 earthquake—creating a dramatic skylight that bathes the turquoise‑brackish waters in sunlight, creating a hovering‑boat illusion.
In antiquity the site was sacred, dedicated to nymphs and Pan; excavations uncovered 3rd–4th‑century BC artefacts, now housed in Argostoli’s museum. Tours via small wooden boats through its illuminated chambers offer an unforgettable glimpse into nature, myth, and beauty.
